25 Best Restaurants in San Francisco Bay Area
In this latest edition of the Top 25, penned as the summer fog gulps the whole of San Francisco, it seems that the prix fixe menu has, in turn, engulfed the Bay Area’s restaurant scene. The times? Uncertain. But the menus don’t have to be.
From a logistical standpoint, a set menu is a good way for a restaurant team to ride the waves of supply-chain woes — they’ll know exactly how many carrots and scallops they’ll need on a given night. From this Pollyanna-ish diner’s perspective, I admire when a restaurant says, “Trust us,” and I often lunge for the option to find out what it thinks it does best. The result tells you so much.
Two of this list’s newest additions have particularly rewarded that trust. At Mijoté, a new French restaurant in the Mission District, the weekly menu is a series of lowercase nouns printed on a square of paper: The line, “maitake, hazelnuts, lemon” declares the palette, and the dish itself reveals the arc of the brushstrokes. Petaluma’s Table Culture Provisions, a pop-up made good, has undergone a number of transformations in recent years, but its latest iteration as a tasting menu-only restaurant has given the chefs space to hone their unique take on Californian comfort food.
New to the list are Cotogna, Mazra, Mijoté, Reem’s, San Ho Won and Table Culture Provisions. Gone into the fog for now are Capital, Imperial Soup, Juanita and Maude, Lou’s Takeaway, Outta Sight and Octavia.
Keep in mind that businesses may make quick decisions to alter their offerings to reflect an evolving pandemic.
